A CALL TO OBEDIENCE – Elder Nickolas Muhoya

-Let’s start by defining what obedience is. So what is obedience?

According to the dictionary, this is compliance with an order, request or law or submission to another’s authority. It could also be referred to as an act or instance of obeying.

It could also be defined as – to act according to what you have been asked or ordered to do by someone in authority or to behave in accordance to a rule, law or instruction.

-Let’s also define who God is, as to understand better what obedience to Him entails.

Who then, is God?

Elder Nicholas taught that in Christianity and other monotheistic religions, God is seen to be the creator and rule of the universe and source of all moral authority, the supreme being.

In other religions, God is seen as a superhuman being/spirit worshipped as having power over nature or human fortunes, a deity.

In Acts 17:24 – 28, Apostle Paul gives us a glance as to who God actually is.

Other passages to reflect on are Exodus 20:2-17.

There are rewards /blessings to obedience. Elder Muhoya also took us through some of these blessings. We find these blessings highlighted in Deuteronomy 28:1-2, Galatians 5:16-22 (This talks about the results of the flesh versus the fruit of the spirit), Mark 12:30-31.

There are also consequences to disobedience. Some are highlighted in Deuteronomy 28:15-16.

One thing to note however, is that we sometimes struggle because we are not operating in the will of God and we end up becoming very frustrated. We need not stretch ourselves out by working outside the will of God.

God demands to be obeyed even by giving His commandments. We all know of the commandment with a promise, which is ‘Honor your father and mother’. The promise is that all will go well for us, and we will have a long life on earth.

A big question to ask ourselves whenever we make decisions, is what is the determining factor about how you make your decisions? Is it in reference to God? Proverbs 3:5-8 says, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not depend on your own understanding, seek His will in ALL you do, and He will show you which path to take. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.’

In conclusion, we need to firmly root ourselves in God and strive to obey Him in all our ways. Luke 6:47 – 48 gives us an example on what it looks like when we obey God.
