Rest to Test
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? —unless indeed you are disqualified.
The word ‘exam’ speaks of fright and tension in our culture irrespective of how many exams one has passed through. The journey of life involves taking minor exams in the education system but life itself is the major exam. We must continually pause and reflect what we are living for, amending the detours we could have made whether intentionally or unintentionally. Paul challenges the Church to analyse their lives, scrutinize their beliefs and probe their lifestyles if they are still living up to the calling they received. This is a man’s task neither God nor angels can do it. We may get so entangled with serving God till we forget God himself, we get so distracted with maintaining our dignity and forget the dignity giver, we get so entrenched in keeping the blessings and forget the blessings giver. Even in the midst of trouble we should ensure that we are still trusting in God and our hearts are stilled in His presence (Exodus 14:14, Psalm 46:10). In those moments of rest and test, we don’t evaluate ourselves against our peers, our past performance, and our principles but against the life of Christ Jesus, He is the perfect model.
Points to ponder.
- When was the last time I took a Sabbath or day-off and reflected on my personal walk with God?
- Who or what am I benchmarking myself against?
- Am I still a Kingdom candidate or I have been disqualified?
